Nutritious Food for Breastfeeding Mothers

Instead of looking for food for nursing mothers so that the baby is fat, it is better to focus on nutrition in the food consumed by nursing mothers. The following types of foods are recommended for consumption by nursing mothers every day.

Vegetable
Eat at least four servings a day. Each portion is equivalent to one cup of green vegetables or half a cup of raw vegetables.

Fruit
Eat at least three servings a day. Each portion can be a medium-sized whole fruit or half a cup of cut fruit.

Dairy products
Eat at least three servings a day. One cup of yogurt or milk is considered ideal for each portion.

Protein without fat
Eat at least three servings a day. You can choose meat, fish or beans. Each serving should contain 100 grams of animal protein or 30 grams of beans.

Grains
Eat at least four servings a day. An example is 1/3 cup of whole grains (whole handful) or wheat, can also be in the form of a slice of whole-wheat bread.

Favorite food
Even if you have to arrange food, don't miss eating the food you like. Don't forget to always check the nutritional content on the packaging label to find out the nutritional adequacy value.

Don't Forget to Take Vitamins

In the early months after giving birth, you are advised to continue taking prenatal vitamins. You can consult your doctor about this vitamin. After that, you can choose to continue taking special vitamins for breastfeeding mothers or taking regular supplements. The most important thing is to keep getting the following vitamins and minerals:

Calcium
The calcium needs of nursing mothers are the same as the needs of mothers before and during pregnancy, which is 1,000 mg per day. If your daily menu does not contain a lot of milk, canned fish, cereals, bread, juice, and soy, you need to add it through calcium supplements. However, avoid consuming excessive calcium because excess calcium can cause hypercalcemia, kidney stones, and the body will find it difficult to absorb other minerals.

Vitamin D
This one vitamin will supplement calcium because it is easier for the body to absorb calcium. Vitamin D also plays a role in bone growth so as to prevent the body from osteoporosis, diabetes, high blood pressure, and even some autoimmune diseases. Furthermore, vitamin D also plays a role in maintaining overall body health.

The right dose of vitamin D for women is 600 IU (15 micrograms) a day. Avoid taking vitamin D more than 4000 IU because it risks damaging your kidneys and body tissues.

Even though nursing mothers have consumed enough vitamins, breast milk does not necessarily contain enough vitamin D for the baby. Therefore, babies need to get extra vitamin D. Don't forget, consult your doctor first.

DHA
Breast milk can contain DHA especially if nursing mothers routinely consume several portions of fish and foods containing DHA, such as eggs. If you consume less of these foods, you can add DHA supplements to your daily menu. The daily dose of DHA is 200-300 mg.

Even though there are no special foods for nursing mothers to keep the baby fat, you don't need to worry. Fat is not necessarily interpreted as a healthier condition. One thing that is far more important is eating healthy and quality food so that the baby gets quality breast milk too. All this so that the baby can grow and develop optimally.
