A study shows that holding hands or gentle touches to your partner can have positive effects on health, such as reducing stress and overcoming loneliness. However, there are still other benefits of holding hands that you need to know.

When holding hands, a warm feeling may be connected and you can feel it. This feeling arises because the body releases the hormone oxytocin, also known as the love hormone.

The higher the oxytocin hormone released by the body, the greater your desire to hold hands or even touch and hug your partner. This not only keeps the relationship romantic, but can also maintain body health.

The following are some of the health benefits of holding hands:


1. Reduce pain

Small-scale research shows that hand holding can reduce pain. This was proven by an experiment involving 22 couples.

The women in the experiment were given pain in the forearm for 2 minutes. When the partner is allowed to hold the woman's hand, the pain the woman feels slowly subsides.

Through electroencephalography (EEG) monitoring, it can also be seen that the brain wavelengths of men and women are most synchronized when they hold hands. This proves that pain and touch correlate with a partner's level of empathy.

Scientists argue that the calming and pain-reducing effects of hand holding are the same as breathing exercises or meditation. This is what makes hand holding often considered a natural analgesic therapy.

2. Relieves stress

Hand holding can slow the heart rate, lower blood pressure, and reduce the production of stress hormones. When there is physical contact with someone you love, the body will produce more serotonin which causes feelings of happiness, and reduces the production of cortisol or the stress hormone.

As a result, the tension and stress you feel is reduced because you feel more relaxed. When stress is reduced, you and your partner will also feel happier, which can create a healthy relationship. This certainly contributes positively to physical and mental health.

3. Increase body endurance

Chronic stress can disrupt brain functions that regulate the body's immune system. When you are stressed, the hormone cortisol is released making you more susceptible to getting sick or feeling pain. Conversely, when stress levels decrease, the body will be better able to fight infection and pain.

Therefore, holding hands can be an alternative for increasing body endurance because it can reduce stress.

4. Helps lose weight

As previously explained, holding hands can make the body release the hormone oxytocin. The hormone oxytocin is an appetite hormone that is released when we feel full, to signal to the brain to stop eating.

So, when there is a release of the hormone oxytocin caused by holding hands, the effect will also be the same as when you feel full. Therefore, hand holding can reduce weight.

5. Overcome feelings of loneliness

A study suggests that holding hands can overcome feelings of loneliness. The reason is, gentle touch can reduce feelings of anxiety and loneliness in the social environment.

6. Overcoming anxiety

Anxiety can arise due to active sympathetic nerves increasing the release of catecholamine and glucocorticoid compounds, thereby causing an increase in heart rate and blood pressure. By holding hands, this feeling of anxiety will be reduced.

Holding hands can also improve your mood. The reason is, holding hands with loved ones can calm the nervous center and slow down the heart rate, so that the body will produce the hormone serotonin which causes a feeling of happiness.

Holding hands is a simple action that can maintain harmonious relationships and improve physical and mental health. To be more harmonious, take advantage of the time with your partner and enjoy happy times together.
