Complications due to conjunctivitis can occur in children and adults. Below are some of the complications of conjunctivitis that can occur based on the type of conjunctivitis suffered.
Infective conjunctivitis
Conjunctivitis can last for several months if it is caused by a s*xually transmitted disease, such as chlamydia. The following are some of the complications that can occur due to infective conjunctivitis:

- If bacteria enter the bloodstream and invade body tissues, patients can experience blood poisoning or sepsis.
- The spinal cord protector and the brain, or meninges, can get an infection (meningitis).
- Middle ear infection. This condition is experienced by 25 percent of children who suffer from conjunctivitis due to the bacteria Haemophilus influenzae.
- The surface of the skin becomes swollen or inflamed and feels pain due to an infection that occurs in the tissues and inner layers of the skin (cellulitis).
Neonatal conjunctivitis
Infective conjunctivitis that occurs in newborns up to the age of 28 days must be treated immediately because it can cause permanent vision damage. Most babies affected by infective conjunctivitis can recover completely and only a few experience complications.
Punctate Epithelial Keratitis
Keratitis can occur due to conjunctivitis which causes the cornea to swell or experience inflammation. This condition causes the eyes to be sensitive to light and pain. Blindness can occur if ulcers appear on the cornea and cause permanent damage.
