Recognize the Types of Joints in Humans

In your body there are various joints with different roles. There are immovable joints, but there are also movable joints that allow you to walk back and forth or move your arm up and down.

Joints are places where two or more bones meet. Most joints function to support the movement of bones. In adults, there are about 360 joints that connect the bones.

Types of Joints in Humans

Based on their function, joints are divided into immovable joints (synarthrosis), rigid joints (amphiarthrosis), and movable joints (diarthrosis). The following is an explanation of the three types of joints:

Dead joints

Immovable joints or synarthrosis are joints that cannot be moved. This joint does not have a joint cavity so that the bone is directly fused with fibrous tissue, generally in the form of collagen.

The most easily recognizable example of a dead joint is the joint in the infant's skull. In infants, the skull bone at the crown will be connected by sutures (sutures) which will harden into bone as the baby ages.

Stiff joints

Rigid joints or amphiarthrosis are joints that can be moved but in a limited way. This is because rigid joints do not have a joint cavity so that the bone directly fuses with the cartilage.

Rigid joints can be found in the joints between the spine or the ribs that connect to the sternum. Another example of a stiff joint is the joint that connects the pubic bone (symphysis pubis) to the pelvis.

movable joints

Movable joints or diarthrosis are joints that can be moved freely. This joint is also known as a synovial joint because it contains synovial fluid as a lubricant. This fluid allows all parts of the joint to move smoothly.

Movable joints are the most common types of joints found in the human body. This joint consists of six kinds with different ways of working.

The following are the types of movable joints:

  • Ball and socket joints, namely joints that can move in all directions. Examples of ball joints are the joints in the shoulder and hip
  • Sliding joints (gliding or plane joints), namely joints that allow movement or shift between bones. An example of a sliding joint is the wrist and ankle joints
  • Hinge joints, namely joints that work like a door hinge by opening and closing movements. An example of a hinge joint is the knee and elbow joints
  • Condyloid joints, ie joints that allow movement in both directions flexibly, except for circular motion. An example of a rolling joint is the joint in the jaw and fingers
  • The saddle joint, which is itself that allows the bones to move in various directions flexibly. An example of a saddle joint is the joint at the base of the thumb bone
  • Pivot joints, which are joints that allow bones to surround or rotate around other bones. An example of a swivel joint is a joint in the neck

Joints have a very important role in body movement. Therefore, it is recommended that you always maintain joint health so that you can carry out daily activities smoothly.

However, if you experience any of the joint health problems, such as arthritis or joint pain, immediately consult a doctor for appropriate treatment.
