Myopia, Reduce Severity Early on

Myopia can be experienced by anyone, from children to adults. However, compared to adults, children are more prone to experience a faster minus growth. Even so, the severity of this Myopia can be prevented early on in several ways.

Myopia or nearsightedness

Myopia or nearsightedness occurs when your vision becomes blurry when you see objects that are far away. This condition is caused by the shape of the eyeball being longer or the surface of the cornea being more curved than it should be, so the eye cannot focus the incoming light properly.

Myopia can be inherited from parents who also have a similar condition. Usually, children start suffering from Myopia when they are 8-12 years old and can get worse as a teenager.

Not only that, people who suffer from Myopia are also known to be more at risk of experiencing various vision problems, such as glaucoma, cataracts, and blindness. Therefore, Myopia needs to be treated early so that it does not develop into a severe condition and complications do not occur.

How to Prevent Myopia from Getting Worse

There are several things that can be done to prevent Myopia from getting worse, namely:

1. Increase outdoor activities

The habit of looking at the screen of electronic devices excessively, such as cellphones, televisions, or computers, can worsen Myopia. Therefore, outdoor activities are recommended to rest the eyes.

Research says that increasing outdoor activity is believed to prevent Myopia from getting worse. Parents also need to limit their gadget play time, which is 1 hour for children aged 2-5 years and 2 hours for children aged 6-12 years.

2. Consumption of good nutrition for the eyes

Eating nutritious foods is also necessary to maintain eye health. Some nutrients that are good for the eyes include vitamin A, vitamin C, vitamin D, vitamin E, calcium, magnesium, selenium, zinc, lutein, zeaxanthin, and omega 3.

These nutrients can be obtained from fish, eggs, carrots, oranges, almonds, as well as milk and processed products.

3. Have regular eye exams

Regular eye examinations to the ophthalmologist aim to monitor eye conditions and prevent worsening of Myopia. It is highly recommended to have your eyes checked at least once every 1 or 2 years.

As for children, eye examinations should be done at the age of 6 months, 3 years, and 6 years.
The Effectiveness of Glasses to Hold Myopia Rate

People with low eye need to use glasses with minus lenses to correct blurred vision. The use of certain types of minus lenses, such as defocus incorporated multiple segments (DIMS), is known to be effective in inhibiting minus accumulation in the eye.

This type of minus lens can be used specifically by children as a group that is prone to experiencing rapid minus growth.

If you or your child has difficulty seeing long distances, you should have this problem checked by an ophthalmologist. The doctor will recommend a visual acuity check, then prescribe the appropriate size and type of lens if it is necessary to use glasses.
