Physical examination of the hernia is one of a series of examinations to detect hernias. This examination is done by observing and feeling the location of the hernia. Physical examination of the hernia is the best way to detect various types of hernias, such as inguinal hernias and femoral hernias. This examination must be done by a doctor and cannot be done independently.
Indications of Physical Examination in Hernia
Physical examination of the hernia aims to detect lumps and damage to surrounding tissue. This examination can also find out if there is a hernia complication, namely a blockage or pinching of an organ in the body that comes out.
Some types of hernias that can be detected by physical examination are:
- inguinal hernia
- Femoral hernia

- Umbilical hernia
While in a hiatal hernia, the organs in the abdomen are pushed into the chest cavity through an opening in the diaphragm. This condition rarely causes lumps so it cannot be detected through a physical examination.
Physical Examination Warning on Hernia
Physical examination of the hernia cannot be performed in patients who have the following complaints:
- Very severe pain
- Nausea and vomiting

- Severe bloating
In hernias that occur in the upper thigh or near the groin (femoral hernia), the lump may go undetected if the patient is obese.

Physical examination of the hernia does not require special preparation. This examination also does not require the patient to fast or take certain drugs. However, patients are advised to record the symptoms experienced and the questions to be asked to the doctor.
Before performing a physical examination, the doctor will ask the patient to take off his clothes and pants.
Physical Examination Procedure on Hernia
Physical examination for hernias is generally safe and lasts a short time. The patient can undergo this examination in a standing or supine position.
During the examination, the doctor will observe a visible lump. The doctor may also ask the patient to cough or strain. This is because in some cases, the lump cannot be seen if the patient does not push.
After observing the lump, the doctor will feel the area of the hernia, for example in the groin, groin, stomach, or belly button. In the inguinal hernia experienced by men, the doctor can also feel the area of the testicles (scrotum).

If the hernia cannot be detected by physical examination, the doctor may suggest further examination in the form of X-rays, ultrasound, and CT scans, in the area suspected of having a hernia.
Patients are advised to immediately consult a doctor if the hernia symptoms get worse, such as:
- Pain is getting worse
- High fever
- Nausea and vomiting
- Can't BAB
- Changes in skin color in the hernia area
Complications of Physical Examination in Hernia
Physical examination of the hernia did not cause any complications. However, if the hernia has caused complications, such as intestinal obstruction, the patient may experience severe pain at the site of the hernia during a physical examination.
