5 Differences between tumors and cancer

Tumors and cancer are often associated with one another. Both are also often considered the same by ordinary people. In fact, there are several differences between tumors and cancer that will affect the treatment of these two conditions.

Difference between Tumor and Cancer

To better understand these differences, first identify the meaning of tumors and cancer. A tumor is a lump or tissue that grows abnormally which can be benign or malignant. Meanwhile, cancer is a malignant tumor.

Here are the following explanations to better understand the difference between tumors and cancer:

1. By its nature

In general, a tumor appears when there is excessive cell growth in a tissue and forms a lump. When these cells are malignant and their growth is uncontrolled, the tumor that forms is called a malignant tumor or cancer.

2. Of its shape

The difference between tumors and subsequent cancers is from their shape. Tumors usually have smoother edges, while cancers have irregular edges.

Cancer can indeed start from a tumor lump. However, there are also types of cancer that are not lumps, such as blood cancer (leukaemia), lymph node cancer (lymphoma), and cancer that attacks plasma cells in the bone marrow (myeloma).

To distinguish between tumors and cancer, an examination is needed by taking tissue samples for further examination using a microscope (biopsy).

3. From the speed of development

Another significant thing that is the difference between tumors and cancer is the speed of development. Tumors tend to develop more slowly. Meanwhile, cancer grows rapidly and even takes nutrients from healthy cells.

4. From the spread and damage caused

Benign tumors do not damage the healthy cells and tissues around them and are not at risk of spreading to other tissues or parts of the body. This is the reason benign tumors are considered harmless.

Conversely, malignant or cancerous tumors can spread to other parts of the body and can damage the healthy cells around them. When it spreads, cancer can form new tumors that are also destructive.

Because of its fast development and very destructive, the existence of cancer needs to be detected early so that treatment can be immediately carried out to prevent its growth and development.

5. From its management

The difference between tumors and subsequent cancers is in terms of management. Not all types of tumors require treatment, while cancer must be treated so that it does not spread further.

However, the tumor needs to be monitored for its progress. This is because some tumors may later develop into cancer or press on other organs.

If the doctor decides to treat the tumor, the treatment given can be in the form of applying corticosteroid cream to shrink the tumor, surgery to remove the tumor, to radiotherapy.

Meanwhile, cancer is treated with surgery to remove the cancer, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, hormone therapy, photodynamic therapy, hyperthermia, and immune therapy. Treatment can be done only one type, but often in the form of a combination of several procedures.

That is the difference between a tumor and cancer. If you find an unusual lump in a certain part of the body, you should immediately consult a doctor.

To determine whether the lump is a tumor or cancer, the doctor will ask you to undergo supporting examinations in the form of blood tests, X-rays, ultrasound, CT scan, MRI, or biopsy.

After the type of tumor is known, the doctor will provide appropriate treatment. Treatment will be adjusted to the size, location, whether the tumor is malignant or not, and its stage or severity.
