The high glycemic index is above IG 70. It means that carbohydrates in food quickly break down and release glucose or sugar into the blood. Foods with high IG numbers include high fructose corn sugar, potatoes, white rice, white bread, and sweet potatoes. Meanwhile, the numbers 55 and below indicate the opposite. Foods with low IG numbers in addition to brown sugar are kidney beans, black beans, legumes, and whole grains such as whole grains, and most vegetables. On the other hand, white sugar or sucrose is classified into the intermediate GI in the IG 56-69 range.

However, keep in mind that IG numbers on the same food can vary depending on the source of the test. This number can also differ from one individual to another, depending on the processing process and what food is consumed with it.

For example, the actual low glycemic index of brown sugar can be high if consumed together with other food ingredients that contain carbohydrates. In other words, the benefits of brown sugar are not absolute, but still, need to be aware of the alloy.

Apart from that, with a relatively small IG number, brown sugar is claimed to be a better choice for diabetic patients compared to white sugar whose IG numbers are slightly higher.

The benefits of brown sugar are safe but do not mean free

Brown sugar is safe for people with diabetes while still paying attention to limits. Although the IG numbers of brown sugar and white sugar are different, it does not mean brown sugar can then be consumed freely. This is because the calories and carbohydrate content are almost equivalent to white sugar, which is about four grams of carbohydrates and 15 calories per teaspoon. What's more, we must review the benefits of brown sugar on the market because it could have been mixed with cane sugar and other ingredients that can make the glycemic index high. Therefore, the key is if you want to use brown sugar as a sweetener, consume in limited quantities.

If you have diabetes and really want to eat sweet snacks, you can choose healthy alternative foods, such as fruit salad or fresh fruit. If you still want to use sugar, whatever the type of sugar, pay attention to the total amount of carbohydrates on the product label. That way, you can readjust your daily diet plan according to the amount of carbohydrate calculation allowed.
