The Symptoms of Knee Osteoarthritis and How to Overcome It

Knee osteoarthritis is an inflammatory joint disease that attacks the knee. This condition, which is often characterized by pain and stiffness in the knee, can get worse if left untreated. Therefore, it is important to know the symptoms and how to deal with them.

Knee osteoarthritis can occur when cartilage is damaged or injured, causing friction in the knee joint. This is what causes pain in the knee and the knee feels stiff and becomes swollen.

Generally, knee osteoarthritis is more common in women, overweight people, and adults over 45 years of age. Even so, under certain conditions, this condition can also be experienced by someone with a younger age.

Symptoms of Knee Osteoarthritis

Knee pain is the most common symptom experienced by people with knee osteoarthritis. This pain will get worse with activity and improve when resting.

In addition to pain, there are several symptoms of knee osteoarthritis that also often appear, namely:

  • Knee stiffness, especially in the morning or after sitting for a long time
  • Knee feels warm and swollen
  • There is a 'clicking' sound or sound when moving the knee
  • Knee feels difficult to move, for example when walking and going down stairs

How to Overcome Knee Osteoarthritis

In general, knee osteoarthritis is incurable. Treatment aims to reduce pain and slow the worsening of the sufferer's condition.

As a first step to determine the diagnosis, the doctor will perform a physical examination of the knee, ask the symptoms you are feeling, and check your family's medical history, because this disease can also be influenced by heredity.

If it is suspected that knee osteoarthritis is suspected, the doctor will recommend carrying out supporting examinations, such as blood tests, X-rays of the knee joint, MRI of the knee, and examination of joint fluid.

Furthermore, the doctor will provide treatment according to the severity of the knee osteoarthritis suffered. Some of the treatments that can be given include:

  • Taking medications, such as pain relievers and non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs)
  • Take supplements, such as glucosamine and vitamin D
  • Use of topical medications or creams containing capsaicin to relieve pain
  • Use of assistive devices, such as knee braces and special footwear
  • Therapy, such as physiotherapy, occupational therapy and acupuncture therapy

To relieve the pain that appears, you can compress the sore knee with cold and warm compresses. For a cold compress, you only need to apply ice cubes that have been wrapped in a towel, then stick it on the sore knee for 15 minutes.

Meanwhile, for a warm compress, you can use a towel that has been soaked in warm water, then put it on your knee for 15 minutes. Compressing the knee with cold and warm water can be repeated 3-4 times a day.

In addition, patients with knee osteoarthritis are also advised to lose and maintain weight to reduce pressure and knee pain, and to exercise regularly when pain has improved to strengthen the muscles around the knee. Types of exercise that you can do are walking, swimming, and yoga.

Those are the symptoms and ways to deal with knee osteoarthritis that you need to know. If you experience symptoms of the disease, you should immediately consult a doctor so that appropriate treatment can be done quickly before it gets worse.
