When experiencing astral projection, a person will feel his soul is outside the body. That is, the person seems to be aware that they are 'coming out' of the body and seeing themselves clearly. This out-of-body phenomenon is believed by the people as an astral or magical journey to another world.
There is some debate among experts regarding astral projection, whether this phenomenon is real or just a hallucination. However, one thing is certain, there is no scientific evidence to support that a person's consciousness can actually move outside the body.
Causes of Astral Projection from the Medical Side
Although it is not certain, there are several factors that are thought to make a person able to experience astral projection, namely:
1. During an episode of cardiac arrest
The transfer of a person's soul from their body to another world that is not real is often experienced when they are in a near-death situation, such as a heart attack. One study stated that some people who were unconscious when they had a heart attack or when they were given CPR treatment, said they could see their own bodies from a different perspective. This is thought to be due to brain disturbances during the episode.
2. Brain disorders
Astral projection is very rare, usually only once in a lifetime. However, this may be different in people who have a neurological condition, such as epilepsy or a brain injury. People with this condition are more likely to experience the phenomenon of astral projection. This is thought to be due to nerve damage in the brain which causes a person to experience a perspective disorder so that it seems as if they feel separated from their own body and can see themselves from another perspective.
3. Sleep
The relationship between the occurrence of astral projection and sleep has been studied for a long time by scientists. As a result, these out-of-body experiences are often experienced by a person spontaneously when the body feels calm and relaxed, especially before going to bed or just before waking up. Astral projection that occurs before going to sleep or before waking up is also associated with the condition of sleep paralysis or also known as "crashing". In this condition, a person can experience hallucinations, including feeling out of their own body so that they feel like they are floating.
4. Migraines
Astral projection is also believed to be experienced when migraines recur. This condition is more common in people who experience migraines due to disturbances in the inner ear. This organ functions to control hearing and body balance. When a migraine occurs, the sufferer can experience perceptual disturbances that make him feel separate from himself. However, the mechanism is not known with certainty.
5. Drug use
Side effects of drug use can cause a person to feel outside his own body. This is because these drugs can cause hallucinations and affect the perspective of the brain. Several types of illegal drugs that cause hallucinations are ketamine, marijuana, heroin, and LSD. Sometimes, injection of anesthetic drugs can also cause a similar effect.
6. Lack of oxygen
Experiencing a severe lack of oxygen, for example in a state of drowning or choking, is also believed to make a person feel that their soul is leaving the body as if on an astral journey to another world. Although it still needs to be scientifically proven, this situation is thought to occur as a result of nerve damage in the brain during a life-threatening situation.
Those are some things that are thought to be the cause of astral projection. Even so, it needs to be emphasized again that this phenomenon cannot be supported by much scientific evidence. Even so, people who have experienced astral projection may be excessively afraid to sleep or do activities alone.
