Know 6 Causes of Drooling Sleep

Inappropriate sleeping position is often believed to be the cause of drooling sleep. However, the side effects of medications or suffering from certain medical conditions, such as infections and allergies, GERD, or sleep apnea, can also cause drooling.

Saliva produced by the salivary glands is generally swallowed and reabsorbed into the blood. Well, drooling or drooling from the mouth can occur when saliva is not swallowed or collects in the mouth.

Some people may experience drooling while sleeping at night because the swallowing reflex does not work during sleep. This means that saliva will accumulate in the mouth because it is not swallowed and eventually comes out through the sides of the mouth.

Drooling during sleep is common, especially if you sleep on your stomach or side. However, you should be wary if the saliva that comes out is more than usual. This is because there are several causes of drooling sleep associated with health problems.

Various Causes of Drooling Sleep

Drooling during sleep can cause chapped lips, bad breath, and even dehydration. Therefore, make sure you know what is causing the drooling sleep you are experiencing so that it can be treated appropriately.

The following are some of the causes of drooling sleep:

1. Sleeping on your side or stomach

Sleeping on your side or stomach is the most common cause of drooling. When sleeping in a supine or prone position, saliva will move to follow gravity, namely towards the pillow. This sleeping position then causes drooling.

To minimize drooling while sleeping, try sleeping on your back. In addition, you can also try using a special mouth gauze during sleep to ensure that your mouth is closed and breathing is done through your nose.

2. Acid reflux disease (GERD)

People with GERD often experience dysphagia or difficulty swallowing because the lining of the esophagus is irritated. As a result, there is an increase in the production of saliva in the salivary glands which then causes drooling, especially during sleep.

If the cause of your drooling sleep is GERD, you can prevent stomach acid from rising by not sleeping immediately after eating or elevating your head and chest position while sleeping.

3. Obstructive sleep apnea

Obstructive sleep apnea is a sleep disorder that can cause your breathing to temporarily stop several times during sleep. This condition makes you often breathe through your mouth, thus triggering drooling during sleep.

In addition to breathing through the mouth, other symptoms of sleep apnea are snoring, choking during sleep, waking at night, headaches when waking up, and often drowsy and difficult to concentrate due to less than optimal sleep quality.

4. Infections and allergies

In addition to sleep apnea, breathing through your mouth is also common if you have a cold, sore throat, sinusitis, or allergies due to inflammation of the sinuses and blocked airways. This condition then triggers an increase in saliva production and causes drooling.

5. Drug side effects

Some types of drugs are known to cause excess saliva production. These drugs include antipsychotic drugs, drugs to treat Alzheimer's disease, and several types of antibiotics.

6. Bruxism

Bruxism is the habit of grinding your teeth while sleeping. This habit can occur simultaneously with drooling during sleep.

If you have bruxism, you will usually breathe through your mouth. This keeps the mouth open and allows saliva to escape during sleep.

Bruxism can be a symptom of health problems, such as dehydration, stress, or acid reflux disease.

In addition to some of the conditions above, other causes of drooling sleep are disorders of the nervous system that stimulates the salivary glands, such as in people with Parkinson's disease, cerebral palsy, stroke, or Bell's palsy.

To overcome drooling sleep, doctors may recommend the following treatments:

  • Sleep in the supine position
  • Consume more fluids to keep the body hydrated and saliva to be watery
  • Using a mandibular device while sleeping to reduce saliva production and snoring
  • Perform continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) therapy if drooling sleep is caused by sleep apnea
  • Doing Botox injections in the salivary glands that surround the mouth so that saliva production is not excessive
  • Perform surgical removal of the salivary glands if the cause of the drooling sleep is due to a severe neurological disorder or if the drooling sleep is not successfully treated with other treatments

If you are drooling, do not hesitate to consult a doctor. The doctor will conduct an examination and provide appropriate treatment according to the cause of the drooling sleep you are experiencing.
