"Red meat is very bad for blood cholesterol," said nutritionist and Associate Professor in nutritional science from the University of Hawaii, Jinan Banna PhD RD, as reported by EatThis.

Jinan said, people who want to prevent or are having problems with high cholesterol levels should stay away from red meat. If you can't, at least you need to reduce your red meat intake.

Red meat is labeled bad for blood cholesterol levels because it contains saturated fat and cholesterol. When consumed together in excess, saturated fat and cholesterol from food can cause an increase in blood cholesterol levels.

"It also increases the risk of cardiovascular disease," explains Jinan.

Eating foods high in saturated fat can encourage the body to produce "bad" cholesterol or LDL in the blood. This condition affects cholesterol levels to be high.

Studies in the Cochrane Database of Systematic Reviews also show that reducing saturated fat intake can help lower blood cholesterol levels. In addition, limiting saturated fat intake helped reduce the risk of cardiovascular events by 17 percent.

A 2019 study also showed a link between reducing red meat intake and lowering blood cholesterol levels. The American Heart Association advises people with high cholesterol levels to reduce their saturated fat intake to less than 6 percent of their total daily calorie requirement. This figure is equivalent to 11-13 grams of saturated fat per day.
