Know the Symptoms of Kidney Cancer and its Treatment

Symptoms of kidney cancer generally vary, depending on the stage of cancer suffered. These various symptoms are important to know so that kidney cancer can be detected early. That way, proper treatment can be done and the chances of recovery are higher.

Kidney cancer can occur when there is abnormal cell growth in the kidney tissue. This abnormal cell growth can form a lump or tumor and spread to other tissues or organs of the body.

So far, the cause of kidney cancer is not known with certainty. However, a person can be said to be at risk if he has a smoking habit, is obese, has diabetes or high blood pressure, has a family history of kidney cancer, or is undergoing dialysis for a long period of time.

Various Symptoms of Kidney Cancer

In the early stages, kidney cancer rarely causes typical symptoms because the lump or tumor is still small and is limited to the kidney organ. However, as the tumor grows and the cancer cells begin to spread, various complaints can arise.

The following are some of the symptoms of kidney cancer that can appear:

  • Lump in the waist or abdomen
  • Low back pain
  • Bloody urine
  • Swelling of the legs
  • Fever
  • Fatigue
  • Lack of blood or anemia
  • Skin looks pale
  • No appetite
  • Weight loss for no apparent reason

When cancer cells have spread to other organs, the complaints felt can be related to the affected organs. For example, if cancer cells spread to the lungs, symptoms may include shortness of breath or coughing up blood.

Meanwhile, if the cancer cells spread to the bones, the sufferer can experience bone or joint pain.

Kidney Cancer Diagnosis and Treatment

The doctor will confirm the diagnosis of kidney cancer through a series of examinations, ranging from a physical examination to supporting examinations, such as urine tests, blood tests, X-rays, ultrasound, CT scans, or MRIs, as well as kidney biopsies.

The examination procedure needs to be carried out in order to determine the stage and appropriate treatment. Based on the stage, kidney cancer is divided into four stages, namely:

  • Stage 1, the cancer is less than 7 cm and is still located in the kidney only
  • Stage 2, cancer measuring more than 7 cm and still located in the kidney only
  • Stage 3, cancer has spread to blood vessels
  • Stage 4, cancer has spread to lymph nodes, adrenal glands, and other organs

After the severity of kidney cancer is determined, treatment steps will be given according to the stage and condition of the sufferer. Treatments that can be done to treat kidney cancer include:

  • Surgery, to remove cancer cells in part or all of the kidney
  • Ablation therapy, to destroy cancer cells by heating or freezing them
  • Embolization, to reduce blood flow to cancer cells in the kidney
  • Radiotherapy, to destroy and slow the spread of cancer cells through radiation exposure

If you experience some of the symptoms of kidney cancer, you are advised to immediately consult a doctor for proper diagnosis and treatment. The reason is because some of the symptoms that appear may not be cancer, but are the result of symptoms from other similar diseases, such as kidney infections.

For those of you who have one of the conditions or risk factors for kidney cancer, it is recommended to do a medical check-up at least once a year or as recommended by a doctor. This is done as an effort to detect kidney cancer early, so that the chances of recovery are even greater.
